JAKARTA, 23 OCTOBER 2021 – Festival Indonesia Hidden Heritage Week (IHHW) 2021 which was held creatively by the Indonesian Hidden Heritage hub (IHH) virtually on 21-30 October has entered the third day. Today, Saturday, 23 October 2021, IHH held a virtual tour themed 'Knowing the Culinary Wealth of the Sea Tribe'.

“The typical cuisine of the Sea Tribe is not explored much so not many people know it. This virtual tour is an effort of Indonesia Hidden Heritage to promote the culinary of the Sea Tribe,"said Founder of Indonesia Hidden Heritage and Executive Director of Indonesia Hidden Heritage Week 2021.

The virtual tour 'Knowing the Culinary Wealth of the Sea Tribe' is the result of a collaboration with Idfi Pancani from the Piknik Together Idfi platform. Culinary of the Sea Tribe has the potential to be developed as part of heritage tourism. The Sea Tribe, also known as Orang Laut or Orang Sampan, is a tribe that lives in the coastal areas of the Riau Archipelago, Riau, Dabo Singkep, Tajur Biru, Indragiri Hilir and Kampung Bajo Laut Lukko Siangpiong in North Konawe Regency which is the border area between Southeast Sulawesi and Central Sulawesi.

Sea tribes like to move from one ocean to another without knowing the territorial boundaries of an area so that they can stop and inhabit any area.. Idfi gave an example of the Sea Tribe in Dabo Singkep who came from Bugis and then sailed in the sea for a long time and did not return to their area..

During the virtual tour, participants are invited to see for themselves the life of the Sea Tribe in different areas. Idfi's virtual journey starts from Panglong Village and then to Lingga Regency, Bangka Belitung and eastern Indonesia.

Promote Gubal

In accordance with the commitment of Indonesia Hidden Heritage as a creative hub that promotes and develops the potential of Indonesia's cultural history tourism, virtual tour is a place to introduce the culinary specialties of the Sea Tribe. One of them is Gubal which is the staple food of the Sea Tribe in Lingga Regency.

“The Sea Tribe is a remote indigenous community in Lingga Regency, the majority of whom work as traditional fishermen. Their staple foods are sago and fish,"explained the Founder of the Picnic with Idfi, Idfi Pancani.

Now some of the Sea Tribes have lived and settled on small islands around Senayang District, Lingga County. On 2018 registered there 830 family or 4.064 soul in 30 the point of the Sea Tribe village in Senayang. The Sea Tribe cares about environmental sustainability, reflected in the habit of catching fish using only fishing rods and spears. The Sampan people's livelihood as fishermen makes their cuisine unique, the main ingredient is using fresh fish caught in a traditional style and cooked with spices.

Gubal is a special Lingga food made from raw sago. Made from a mixture of grated young coconut. “Usually sapwood is mixed and matched with stingray curry or shark fish with spicy and sour sauce. The process of making this gubal does not use cooking oil,”Explained Idfi.

In the folk tale of the Baroque Oath, gubal is the food of the Baroque people who are one of the subethnic of the Sea People in Lingga. Apart from the Mantang. The Baroque King invited forty-four kings from the south, West, east and north to the Baroque island.

Guests who come are served gubal with spicy sour curry. Forty -four kings came to ask, why be served with such food. For the Baroque King, Gubal sago is a special food and is considered an honorable food in welcoming guests.

Remembering that the Sampan people are natives of Indonesia, their story, including their culinary riches, important to tell because it captures a moment in time that is part of Indonesian history. The virtual tour held at the Indonesia Hidden Heritage Festival is an effort by Indonesia Hidden Heritage to share information about Orang Laut cuisine with Indonesians and the world as well as help the Sea Tribe culture find their place on the Indonesian food map..
