TRAVELING has become a part of Indonesian customs, including millennial generation. Millennial tourism trends tend to increase from year to year. Usually they spend their time off for travel and explore a specific city or country. This is evidenced by the increasing number of domestic and foreign tourist trips made by Indonesians every year.

According to BPS data, figures for Indonesian domestic travel on 2018 increased by 12,37% compared to years 2017. The trend of traveling abroad has also increased, increased 10% in the first semester 2019 compared to the same period on 2018.

Seeing the increase, Mozilla conducted a survey in December 2019 observing Indonesian millennial tourism trends. The survey was conducted on 501 respondents aged 18 to 32 years in the Jabodetabek area. Let us check what the findings are!

1. Millennial travel with family

Seasonal holidays are a big part of millennials' travel habits. The survey results show 88% respondents traveled at a certain time, like at the end of the year, mid-year, or on a red date. Even more interesting, it turns out that the majority of respondents often travel with their families (66%) compared with friends (20%) you know. Only 9% who choose to travel with their girlfriends.

2. Domestic tourist destinations are more popular

77% respondents prefer to travel within the country compared to traveling abroad even though they have an adequate budget. other than that, half of respondents said the uniqueness of a tourist spot was an important consideration in choosing a destination.

Another interesting point is 68% respondents actually prefer to explore various places in one city / region, compared to having to go to many cities but not exploring them as a whole (32%). Most of them prefer to explore a city and the local culture in it in depth.

3. Social media is an important source of reference for millennial travel

So that millennial travel is memorable, planning is considered important. Based on Mozilla's survey results, most tourists do not use the services of tour agents or travel experts to plan their tours. 72% respondents said they collect travel information from Instagram. Social media like Youtube (62%) and Facebook (40%) is also an important reference for finding tourist information.

4. Tend to store and share travel information

Then, what millennials do after gathering tourist information? Half of the respondents save this information in digital format. In addition, 47% respondents often share travel information with others on social media or chat applications, whereas only 18% who share travel information when they meet face to face.

The survey results show the important role of social media for users' tourism needs. The majority of respondents tend to share their travel experiences on social media. Even more, they usually draw inspiration from other people's digital content. Along with the changing tourist habits of millennials, they like to find the most efficient way to access information on the Internet.

5. Taking hits photos and videos is the most important thing while on vacation

As much 94% respondents said the vacation period of one to seven days was ideal, they do not really like long vacations. Within that limited time span, they always want to capture every moment of the trip and create memories that will last a lifetime.

It is proven that more than half of the respondents think that taking good photos or videos is the most important thing to do during the holidays. Well that's about the scenery, tourist attraction, food, or other activities, Millennials always want to save their various experiences on digital platforms. Without taking pictures while on vacation, surely there is something missing in his memories.
